SPIKE IT UP!!!

Yahoooo!!! What a week we've had - our healthy product is called the MEGA SPIKE...our slogan is SPIKE IT UP!!!  We have had great learning discussions with Room 13 around the ingredients, we researched what we thought all the children might like to eat on the MEGA  SPIKE.  Money was a factor - some of the ingredients we wanted were too expensive...the watermelon and mango had to stay at Pak'n'save.  We had a fantastic afternoon tasting cheese, red grapes, green grapes, celery, apple, pineapple, carrot, minimallows, gummy bears and chocpicks.  We also had to decide what base would be the best one for our consumers - apple, orange or kiwifruit.  After our tasting afternoon we decided with our Room 13 buddies what the final recipe would be -  Room 18 used tally marks to collate all the data from the recipes that the children made and presented their findings to Room 13.  Check out the photo of the MEGA SPIKE to see which ingredients were loved the most.  We haven't decided if this is our final look yet...we are still in the process of trialling our product.
Now we are thinking carefully about our stall presentation and advertising.  We have lots of ideas up our sleeves and you'll soon be hearing from us - SPIKE IT UP!!!

Technology Day

Term 4

Market Day is on its way on Friday 14th November.  Room 18 has been working with Room 13 on our technology unit.  We decided we will be making hedgehogs and have spent time working out what our ingredients will be. Miss Akroyd and Mrs Stevens have been working with us on what our packaging will look like.  We have had to think about the label - nutrition information, ingredients, logo, colours, storage and where it is made.  We don't need a bar code because at our market day there will be no scanners!  We have lots of work to do this week...

The town mouse and the Country Mouse retold by Camden. R

Once upon a time a city mouse went to visit his cousin country mouse.  He lived in a barn with other farm animals like horses, cows, pigs, chickens, cats and dogs. The town mouse didn't like the straw beds so he said, "I'll take you home and show you how to live."
The country mouse was serious so he said, "I'll come with you."  So they arrived at the mouse town residence and they went in to the several storied hotel and they went down to the cellar, squeezed through a brick wall and got in to the cellar and saw cakes and muffins, pies, grapes and all the nice stuff.
Suddenly, woof woof.  The country mouse said, "What's that sound?"
"It's just the hotel dogs," said town mouse. Eek, the door opened and two humongous dogs stormed in the room. The country  mouse scattered with fear to the door. "Going so soon," said town mouse.
"Well yes, it's better to eat beans and bacon in peace then eat cakes and ale in fear"  squeaked the county mouse.  He sped on home back to the barn.

The Pied Piper of Hamlin - retold by Milly

There once was a beautiful city called Hamlin.  It was in Germany past the rivers and on a mountain.  Hamlin was very beautiful until one day a vicious plague of rats came to invade Hamlin.  Rats came every day, black, white, shiny, thin and fat.  Village people went to the mayor for a meeting but no one thought up a plan to catch the rats.  A few minutes later a stranger came in and said “I am the Pied Piper.  If you give me 1000 dollars after I get the rats out of the town your children will not pay.”
He had a silver flute, he was taller than the tallest man in town and had a pink feather.  Everybody was laughing at him but half of the people said, “Yes!”
The next morning the Pied Piper woke up very early so he could start his work.  Pied Piper started to play his shiny flute.  Thousands of rats came bounding out of every corner to follow the beautiful music.  When the water was up to his knees the rats tumbled into the flowing water and drowned.  Pied Piper ran back to town and snarled at the mayor, “I drowned all of the rats, can I have my 1000 gold shimmering coins please?”  but the mayor shouted “No! You only get 50 dollars.”
The Pied Piper disagreed and did not take the 50 dollars.  Instead he warned the mayor, “You get one day to give me 1000 dollars otherwise your children will pay!”
“Ha ha ha!  How will the children pay?  Ha ha ha,” laughed the mayor.
“Cock a doodle doodle doo,” went the cockerel (which is a type of chicken), the next morning when the Piper woke up he set to work.  He wasn’t paid that morning so he played the shiny flute and all of the children followed.  When they got up to the mountain lots of rock rumbled off a cliff and everybody was trapped except one boy with sore legs, that was left.

So the moral of the story is to always keep a promise.

Mr Twit - retold by Izabella

This story was written by Izabella in room 18. Hope you enjoy reading it! :)

Mr Twit
Mr Twits face is covered in hair.  It grows in revolting tuffs out of his ears and nose like those of a nail brush.  He is foul and smelly; he never washes.  So as a result his hair was like a mini jungle.  It was full of maggoty cheese, mouldy cornflakes and slimy sardines. Mr Twit was never hungry. Whenever he wanted a snack he would stick out his tongue and search the hairy jungle for a tasty morsel to nibble on. He was always plotting away like mad, thinking of a horrible trick to play on Mrs Twit. Mr Twit had always been a twit, he was born a twit. When he wasn't looking for a morsel he was playing a trick on Mrs Twit like putting a frog on Mrs Twit's pillow. Mr and Mrs Twit used to be monkey trainers in a circus, their garden was a desert of spiky thorns and thistles that Mrs Twit had planted herself. There were four monkeys in a cage outside that Mr Twit would like to train for the first upside down monkey circus. Now that is the story of Mr Twit.

The boy who cried wolf - a retell by Daniel Kendall

Once upon a time there was a boy that watched a flock of sheep.  He wanted some company so he pretended that there was a wolf.  He charged down the slope and he screamed “Wolf, Wolf!!!”
The villagers sprinted to see if the boy was unharmed.  The villagers told the boy to never shriek false alarms again, 3 days later the extremely naughty boy did the same thing again and again.
The villagers came sprinting.  The villagers were ticked off that there was no wolf.  Five days later a wolf really came out of the forest.  When the wolf came out he made a humongous meal of the flock.  The flock was never ever seen again.  The boy was gutted!  The villagers thought it was for the boys own good and that he should never ever, ever lie again.

Term 2

Welcome to Term 2...this term is going to be very exciting with us looking at the topic 'How do stars in the universe have an impact on us?' I am thrilled we have so many children playing rugby, soccer, netball, hockey and miniball. If you are doing something else this term make sure you share it with us in our news time. Remember your news report must have lots of detail - who you played, the score and something exciting (peak) or maybe something that wasn't so great (pit). We have parent interviews coming up in Week 4, keep an eye out for the notices that will come home soon. Welcome to Khorteaz Tua who is joining us in Room 18. He has already been in to meet us and we were able to tell Khorteaz lots about our class. See you all on Monday...Mrs Miller

Our Scarecrow Shop

Yesterday, each group was given $15 to buy clothes for our scarecrows. They had to buy pants for $6, shirts for $3 and a variety of accessories from about $1 to $2.50. Here are the designs some of the groups chose for their scarecrows. Lots of decision making, compromising and listening to each other had to be actioned for each group to succeed. Some groups realised that they needed a leader to help with the decisions.
